Ask a carpet cleaner one question before you book them: "How long until the carpet is dry?" The answer tells you more about the quality of the clean than the price does.
What normal looks like
| Method | Typical dry time | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Truck-mounted hot-water extraction + air movers | 2–4 hours | The professional standard. Furniture back the same day, no scheduling loss. |
| Professional with portable equipment | 6–12 hours | Fine for many homes; longer in humid weather or ground-floor units. |
| Rental machine / store-bought shampooer | 12–24 hours | Over-wets the carpet and backing. This is where musty odors start. |
Why drying speed matters more than people think
Damp carpet is not a neutral state. Carpet backing that stays wet past a day grows bacteria and develops that sour, "wet dog" smell — and once the odor is in the backing, masking it with deodorizer doesn't last. In Maryland this is a summer-and-basement problem: our humidity is high from June through September, and garden-level and basement units stay damp longest.
Drying time is also real money for anyone on a schedule. A landlord turning a unit over a weekend cannot afford a floor that's wet until Sunday night. An office cleaned after hours needs the floor walkable at 8 a.m. A "cheap" cleaning that leaves the carpet wet for two days is not cheap — it costs you the days.
The question that exposes a weak quote
If a cleaner can't give you a drying-time range in writing, they either don't know their own equipment or they're planning to leave you with a wet floor. Reputable Maryland companies put the 2–4 hour dry-time commitment on the quote, because their equipment guarantees it.
What actually controls dry time
- Water recovery, not water use. The trick isn't using less water — it's extracting more. Truck-mounted units generate far more vacuum lift than portables, which is why they leave carpet dry in hours instead of overnight.
- Airflow after the clean. Air movers positioned across the floor after cleaning are half the equation. A good crew dries the carpet actively; a lazy one leaves and hopes.
- Humidity and air circulation in the room. A closed-up rowhouse in August will hold moisture for hours longer than the same floor with a window cracked and a fan running.
- Carpet and pad thickness. Plush, thick pile with a heavy pad holds more water — expect the longer end of the range.
The takeaway
Dry time is the cheapest quality signal in the industry. A 2–4 hour dry time means truck-mounted extraction, professional drying equipment, and a crew that knows what it's doing. A "call us in the morning" dry time means you just rented your own carpet back wet.
